The Atoning Blood of Jesus Christ

2 And reflecting upon the great atoning sacrifice that was made by the Son of God, for the redemption of the world;

3 And the great and wonderful love made manifest by the Father and the Son in the coming of the Redeemer into the world;

4 That through his atonement, and by obedience to the principles of the gospel, mankind might be saved (DC 138:2-4)

Heavenly Father, Elohim, out of His great love for each of us, sent His Only Begotten Son into the world to atone for the sins of the world, to save the world from sin.

Jesus’ suffering, pain, agony, and the shedding of His blood constitutes the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Jesus offered himself as a self-sacrifice on the cross to give His life for us to live the abundant life. Jesus shed His blood on five different occasions to atone for our sins, to shed His atoning blood:

  1. Jesus shed His blood while suffering in Gethsemane, where He sweat great drops of blood from every pore. Here He took upon himself the sins  of all humankind.

  2. Jesus shed His blood while being scourged by Pilate’s cruel soldiers. Jesus received Forty stripes save one for His scourging; in other words, 39 stripes.

  3. Jesus shed His blood while suffering the pains and agonies of the platted crown of thorns under the cruelty of Pilate’s soldiers mocking and torturing Him, causing blood to drip from His head and face.

  4. Jesus shed His blood while suffering death on the cruel cross.  Blood flowed from Jesus’ hands, wrists, feet, and pierced side. His blood soaked the ground at it dripped and poured from His body to the dusty ground of Calvary.

  5. Jesus shed His blood from His pierced side. Longinus, a Roman soldier and centurion, took a lance, a speer, and pierced Jesus’ side to be sure that Jesus was dead. When Jesus side was pierced, immediately blood and water gushed out and falling onto the ground.

Jesus came into the world to be lifted upon the cross, to draw all people unto Him. “We believe that through the atonement of Jesus Christ, all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.” (see Article of Faith number 3)

Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer. Salvation comes in and through Him and His infinite atoning sacrifice.
